國家有突出貢獻中青年專家，國家蔬菜改良中心華中分中心主任，湖北省馬鈴薯工程技術(shù)研究中心主任。中國作物學(xué)會馬鈴薯專業(yè)委員會副主任委員，農(nóng)業(yè)部馬鈴薯專家指導(dǎo)組成員，英國Journal of Horticultural Science and Biotechnology 副主編，《中國農(nóng)業(yè)科學(xué)》、《華中農(nóng)業(yè)大學(xué)學(xué)報》、《中國馬鈴薯》等雜志編委。
　主要從事馬鈴薯遺傳育種、栽培生理和生物技術(shù)領(lǐng)域的研究，先后主持國家自然科學(xué)基金、863、948、國家支撐計劃、農(nóng)業(yè)成果轉(zhuǎn)化、國際合作等項目30多項。育成鄂馬鈴薯1號、3號、4號、6號、華恩1號、華薯1號等新品種。主持研究的馬鈴薯試管薯高效生產(chǎn)技術(shù)獲國家發(fā)明專利，以此為基礎(chǔ)創(chuàng)造了國內(nèi)外周期最短的馬鈴薯繁殖技術(shù)體系。獲湖北省科技進步一等獎、技術(shù)發(fā)明一等獎、農(nóng)業(yè)部豐收計劃一等獎等多項。發(fā)表論文150多篇。
