Programme Mission

The HKU Master of Finance (MFin) Programme is an interdisciplinary programme aiming to provide motivated individuals with not only cutting-edge training in financial theory, but also the necessary mathematical, statistical and computer training, allowing them to apply the knowledge in a multitude of financial disciplines: pricing derivative instruments and securities, modelling and forecasting financial markets, hedging and financial risk management, credit risk management, insurance and reinsurance, quantitative trading and arbitrage training, asset allocation and investment management, and asset/liability management.

Successful graduates will enjoy a competitive advantage in a wide range of career opportunities in commercial and investment banks, brokerage and investment firms, insurance companies, treasury departments of non-financial corporations, regulatory agencies, and also consulting and accounting firms.

Programme Overview

The MFin Programme offered by the Faculty of Business & Economics represents an optimal mix of fundamental and cutting-edge knowledge in all areas of modern finance. The programme includes four basic courses in Financial Analysis that are based on the Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA) curriculum, specifically designed to broaden the candidates' knowledge of Quantitative Analysis, Financial Statement Analysis, Economics and Fundamentals of Asset Valuation, such as investment valuation and portfolio management. These four courses, which will allow students to gain a solid knowledge base to prepare for all levels of the CFA examination, make up the Fundamental Core Module.

After successful completion of the Fundamental Core Module, students will continue their studies in either the Risk Management Stream, or the Financial Engineering Stream. The Risk Management Stream has a core module of five courses, and the Financial Engineering Stream has a core module of six courses. Students will then take elective courses to make up a total of twelve courses in order to graduate.

For Intake 2014 and thereafter, students can choose from one of the following three: Corporate Finance Stream, Financial Engineering Stream and Risk Management Stream, after successful completion of the Fundamental Core Module. Students will then need to take four Advanced Core Courses, two Stream Core Courses of respective streams as well as two elective courses from the pool of electives o make the total number of courses taken twelve.

Programme Details

The Programme offers two streams: 1) Financial Engineering, and 2) Risk Management. Students may concentrate in either one of the two areas according to their interests and career aspirations. Students can be awarded the degree with double concentration in Financial Engineering and Risk Management, provided that they have successfully completed the core courses in both areas plus 3 other electives.

For Intake 2014 and thereafter, the Programmes shall offer three streams: 1) Corporate Finance Stream, 2) Financial Engineering Stream and 3) Risk Management Stream. Students may concentrate in one of the three areas according to their interests and career aspirations. The faculty of Master of Finance comes from a variety of educational backgrounds: finance, economics, statistics, mathematics, law, accounting, computer sciences as well as other quantitative disciplines.

【港大背景】

香港大學(xué)是香港第一所也是歷史最悠久的大學(xué)，由1887年成立的香港西醫(yī)書(shū)院及香港官立技術(shù)專科學(xué)校合并 而成，于1911年在香港島正式創(chuàng)立，中華民國(guó)國(guó)父孫中山為香港西醫(yī)書(shū)院的前身首屆畢業(yè)生。

香港大學(xué)中文校訓(xùn)為“明德格物”，對(duì)應(yīng)拉丁文為Sapientia Et Virtus，立校以來(lái)一貫采用英語(yǔ)教學(xué)，在人文、法律、政治及生物與醫(yī)學(xué)等學(xué)術(shù)領(lǐng)域極為出色，亦為香港及亞洲區(qū)中最享盛名的學(xué)府之一。其采用的教學(xué)模式包括問(wèn)題導(dǎo)向?qū)W習(xí)（problem-based learning），旨在培養(yǎng)學(xué)生的思考。香港大學(xué)是Universitas 21（大學(xué)的國(guó)際性協(xié)會(huì)）的創(chuàng)建成員之一，它在教學(xué)和科研方面都享有國(guó)際聲譽(yù)。

當(dāng)時(shí)西方列強(qiáng)爭(zhēng)相在中國(guó)成立大學(xué)，時(shí)任港督盧押認(rèn)為英國(guó)也應(yīng)該在香港設(shè)立一所大學(xué)，一來(lái)與其他列強(qiáng)競(jìng)爭(zhēng)，二來(lái)讓中國(guó)人（尤其是香港人）認(rèn)同英國(guó)的價(jià)值觀，抗衡其他列強(qiáng)文化理念，便于英國(guó)向華南拓展勢(shì)力，鞏固其在整個(gè)香港的統(tǒng)轄管治。當(dāng)時(shí)兩廣總督和省港工商界亦覺(jué)得成立大學(xué)有助中國(guó)人學(xué)習(xí)西方的科技，使中國(guó)自強(qiáng)，于是出錢(qián)支持。另一方面，當(dāng)時(shí)太古公司轄下的一艘貨船發(fā)生工業(yè)意外事故，導(dǎo)致多名中國(guó)船員傷亡，故急欲修補(bǔ)公司形象，便也出錢(qián)支持成立港大。在英國(guó)政府和其他香港英資（如匯豐銀行）支持下，盧押最終籌得足夠資金籌建大學(xué)，于1910年3月16日主持大學(xué)的動(dòng)工儀式。

1911年港大成立，1912年舉行了正式的創(chuàng)校典禮。因盧吉認(rèn)為當(dāng)時(shí)中國(guó)社會(huì)不適宜接觸西方的人文價(jià)值觀（如共產(chǎn)主義理念），大學(xué)最初模仿利物浦大學(xué)的制度，重理工而輕人文，故只設(shè)三個(gè)學(xué)院：醫(yī)學(xué)院、工程學(xué)院及文學(xué)院，當(dāng)中沒(méi)有開(kāi)設(shè)社會(huì)學(xué)和哲學(xué)等人文課程。1916年12月舉行第一屆畢業(yè)禮，有23個(gè)畢業(yè)生及5個(gè)榮譽(yù)畢業(yè)生。1925-1926年省港大罷工后，政府為進(jìn)一步溝通中西文化，遂召集本港紳商，磋商在香港大學(xué)增設(shè)中文學(xué)系，讓漢文中學(xué)畢業(yè)生入讀。港大中文系于1927年成立，邀得前朝翰林賴際熙、區(qū)大典等執(zhí)教，加上其時(shí)又有富商鄧志昂捐款建立中文學(xué)院、馮平山捐款建立中文圖書(shū)館等，涌起了一股重視中文教育的潮流。

1941年因香港淪陷，本部大樓遭炸毀而停辦，至1945年復(fù)辦。戰(zhàn)后隨社會(huì)需要陸續(xù)加設(shè)理學(xué)院、法學(xué)院、社會(huì)科學(xué)院等。1961年學(xué)生人數(shù)為2000人，是1941年的四倍。1989年后政府推行大專教育本地化，使多數(shù)香港人不用遠(yuǎn)赴英國(guó)讀大學(xué)，也為主權(quán)移交中國(guó)作準(zhǔn)備，便大幅增加大學(xué)學(xué)位和課程種類(lèi)。這使港大學(xué)生人數(shù)倍增，至2001年有學(xué)生14,300名。課程也多達(dá)百多種。主權(quán)移交后，雖數(shù)次被校政風(fēng)波困擾，但大學(xué)逐漸由專注于教學(xué)過(guò)渡為教學(xué)和研究并重，并增加和海內(nèi)外大學(xué)和研究所的學(xué)術(shù)交流，猶以醫(yī)學(xué)研究（如SARS病毒研究）取得不少成果，數(shù)所實(shí)驗(yàn)室亦獲“中華人民共和國(guó)國(guó)家重點(diǎn)實(shí)驗(yàn)室”稱號(hào)。

香港大學(xué)是香港其中一所學(xué)術(shù)排名最高的大學(xué)。根據(jù)《亞洲周刊》，香港大學(xué)在2000年于亞洲最佳大學(xué)的排名中位列第三。于《亞洲周刊》2000年亞洲最佳大學(xué)調(diào)查中香港大學(xué)商學(xué)院的工商管理碩士課程(MBA)于香港中文大學(xué)之后位列第二。香港大學(xué)于《英國(guó)泰晤士報(bào)》(Times Higher Education Supplement,「泰晤士報(bào)高等教育特刊」)2007年的大學(xué)排名中位列全球第十八位。在2008年10月8日公布的最新《〈泰晤士報(bào)〉高等教育——二零零八全球頂尖大學(xué)排行榜》中，香港大學(xué)排名第二十六名。
